Simulation Experience on May 20, 2016
Improving College & Career Readiness in Prince George’s County, MD
During the colloquium teams will enter a simulation experience:
Your school district, Prince George’s County Public Schools, is working to create cutting edge college and career readiness programming for high school students, even within a context of budget shortfalls in the district.
You are now serving as a college and career advisory team for the Superintendent to support decision-making with regard to how the district leverages its financial resources to support college and career readiness for all students in the district. Within your team, you will each take on one role for the duration of the simulation. These are fictitious roles; please bring your past experiences in education and education leadership with you into the role as well as what you have learned about the context in Prince George’s County, MD.
Simulation Roles
- Dr. Alicia Alvarez, Superintendent and group leader of the team during the simulation experience
- Margarita Chavez, Parent Association President and time keeper of the team during the simulation experience
- Derek Williams, NAACP Chapter Leader and recorder for the team during the simulation experience
- Dr. Susan Whiting, University Community Schools Director and team member
- High School Principal and team member
After allocating roles in your team, proceed through this case, making critical leadership decisions to support college and career readiness programming for all students in the district, given the existing financial constraints. At the end of your simulation experience, you will be asked to revisit your team’s decision-making process and create a short presentation to summarize your group’s process, decision-making experiences, and learnings for the case.
