Overview
This module focuses on a case in Prince George’s County, MD where community divisions center on a grant-funding program designed for newcomer families. A leadership team with members from multiple schools housed in the same school building considers how to find a balanced approach to serving recently arrived immigrant families alongside more well-established families.

Simulation Experience on May 21, 2016
Programming for Multilingual Learners in Prince George’s County, MD
During the colloquium teams will enter a simulation experience:
Your school building, Morven Park High School, serves 1,200 students and is broken into 3 academies within one building. Within the context of this simulation, you will be working together to find a balanced approach to serving recently arrived immigrant families alongside more well-established families in your school community.
You are the Morven Park High leadership team. Within your team, you will each take on one role for the duration of the simulation. These are fictitious roles; please bring your past experiences in education and education leadership with you into the role as well as what you have learned about the context in Prince George’s County, MD.
Simulation Roles
- Morven High School Principal and group leader of the team during the simulation experience
- Nursing Academy Principal and time keeper of the team during the simulation experience
- Internationals Academy Principal and recorder for the team during the simulation experience
- Assistant Superintendent of High Schools and team member
- Morven High School Family Coordinator and team member
After allocating roles in your team, proceed through this case, making critical leadership decisions to support multilingual learner programming in your building. At the end of your simulation experience, you will be asked to revisit your team’s decision-making process and create a short presentation to summarize your group’s process, decision-making experiences, and learnings for the case.
Registered participants will begin their collaborative multimedia case experience at Teachers College Columbia University on May 21, 2016 (8 am – 12 pm) in Zankel Building 212C. [Event Map]
The simulation experience takes the real urban district context as the starting point for participants’ learning experiences.
